Andrea Harder, University at Buffalo SUNY – Graduate Student of the City/Urban, Community, and Regional Planning program

As climate change accelerates and drought and rising sea levels become more common, millions of people in affected regions must uproot themselves and seek safety elsewhere. Who are these affected individuals, how might the United States aid them, and be affected by the migration?

Andrea Harder, Graduate Student in the University at Buffalo’s City/Urban, Community, and Regional Planning program will present on Climate Migration this Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 11, marks our seventh 2023 Great Decisions Speaker Series presentation. The series features eight engaging foreign policy discussions introduced and facilitated by leading experts across Western New York. To order tickets, download the 2023 Registration Form.

About Andrea Harder

Andrea Harder is a student at the University of Buffalo pursuing a Master’s degree in Urban Planning with an advanced certificate in sustainability. Over the past year, she has had the opportunity to work for NY Sea Grant People on the Move in a Changing Climate (PEMOCC). PEMOCC leverages Sea Grant’s trusted relationships with local communities to facilitate transdisciplinary collaborations among researchers, practitioners, and coastal stakeholders to improve our understanding of how climate change drives human mobility both towards and away from coastal regions in the United States. Five PEMOCC regional workshops across the country were funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), including the Great Lakes Regional workshop held in June 2022 in Buffalo, NY. In preparation for this workshop, Andrea was hired as a research assistant to analyze the impacts, opportunities, and challenges of climate change and climate-induced migration in the Great Lakes region. Once she graduates, her goal is to start planning for more equitable and resilient urban environments at the local level.
