International smarts, camaraderie, laughs, and much enthusiasm – results are officially in following another successful and festive Community World Trivia competition, hosted again this year on the Roswell Park campus. Trivia aficionados once again gathered on the Roswell Park campus to test their knowledge, show their enthusiasm, and enjoy some dinner, all in support of the International Institute of Buffalo and our educational programs.

Twelve six-person teams answered questions on topics including:

  • Current Events
  • History & Geography
  • Travel the World
  • Arts, Literature & Language
  • Pop Culture, Sports, & Music
  • World Cuisine

Event Emcee Gabe DiMaio asked internationally focused multiple-choice, short-answer, and true-false questions. The team members worked cooperatively to come up with the correct answers.

The judges, Mehwish Sarwari, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Buffalo State University, Heidi Jones, Attorney and Consultant, and Marta Pereyma, Program Officer, International Visitor Leadership Program collected and verified each team’s answers at the end of each round. Aside from bragging rights, the top team won gift cards from local businesses.

This year The Bird Brains (pictured above) unseated two-time champs, Sherlock Homies to capture the title of World’s Most Globally Smart. The Woman Wonderers (below left) grabbed the Second Place Edging out Sherlock Homies (below right).

Community World Trivia is a yearly IIB fundraiser. Proceeds from this event fund vital global education programs for students, such as Model United Nations, Global Kids, and other global education and community programs, such as cultural understanding training and IIB’s community lectures. These programs bring global perspectives to Western New York, educate people about global affairs, and help the region become more aware. In addition to the spirited competition, players learned about the impact IIB’s education programs in the community. This year’s student speaker was North Tonawanda High School’s Soghra Hossainy (pictured below) who discussed the importance of Model United Nations, and the role it played in her life.
