Third Annual Sold-out Refugees of Comedy Show Brings the Laughs

A third-annual sold-out crowd recently enjoyed an evening of laughter, international fare, and music at Buffalo Toronto Public Media’s studios — all to benefit the International Institute of Buffalo (IIB). Again, a resounding success, the Refugees of Comedy event featured established Los Angeles-based and internationally touring comedian Thom Tran, who this year also brought new friends Matt Kirshen and Corinna Yee. Guests were also treated to an unannounced, bonus set by comedian Tom Irwin.  The internationally touring entertainers drew partly from their experiences serving in the United States military and immigrant upbringings to sow light-hearted narratives and connect with an engaged audience.

Executive Director Jennifer Rizzo-Choi kicked the festivities off by giving an update on the integral and historic role the International Institute of Buffalo across the Western New York region while underscoring the importance of community support.

Before the show started, the lively crowd enjoyed an eclectic mix of international food and desserts catered by popular local restaurants, in additional to open bar. Many also participated in a 50/50 raffle, purchased IIB custom gear including limited-edition artwork created especially for IIB by Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Adam Zyglis, and engaged in other avenues to support our work. Attendees also enjoyed opportunities to meet and take photos with the talent.

Several news channels were on site to cover the show. You can click here to watch WGRZ TV’s feature.

All proceeds benefited the International Institute of Buffalo. If you missed your opportunity to help IIB make WNY a better place for, and because of, immigrants and refugees, you can still chip in by making your donation here.
