Controller
The International Institute of Buffalo is a nonprofit seeking an experienced hands-on Controller to join our accounting team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in generating all monthly and year-end reports, AP/AR, cash flow, bi-weekly payroll (ADP), annual audit, grants, as well as managing an accounting team, while ensuring compliance with GAAP.
EDUCATION:
Minimum of a BS in Accounting (Masters preferred) plus 5 to 7 years progressive experience as a Controller in the above areas.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years as a Controller.
- Minimum 3 years of staff management experience.
- Knowledge of accounting best practices in nonprofit accounting management and strong working knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and 501 (c)(3) provisions.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel, QuickBooks, Blackbaud, and ADP.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy for bookkeeping.
- High degree of integrity and excellent judgment; assuring confidentiality.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with excellent follow- through and accurate attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
- Runs bi-payroll and resolves any payroll issues.
- Ensures IIB is compliant with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Calculates PTO time and ensures correct adjustments are made in ADP.
- Works with Human Resources on staff changes in ADP.
- Supervises the day-to-day operational duties of the accounting staff and interns.
- Maintains the integrity and accuracy of the accounting system: reviews financial transactions and invoices to ensure the proper allocation of revenue and expenses to cost centers.
- Manages vendor relationships and maintenance of vendor accounts payable.
- Assists with customer relationships and maintenance of accounts receivable.
- Reconcile all bank accounts and credit cards monthly.
- Handles bank deposits within 48 hours of receipt.
- Works with departmental directors to provide continuous accurate accounting.
- Prepares and submits employee/employer retirement contributions.
- Close books monthly and prepare year-end closing documents.
- Providing appropriate reporting to Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
- Assists the Grants team with various financial reporting.
- Prepares financial documentation and assists with annual audits.
- Investigates variances, reports discrepancies, and communicates issues.
- Utilizes Blackbaud including troubleshoots accounting software issues.
- Conducts annual evaluations, addresses performance issues and disciplinary action for finance team.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
On site, in office, 5 days per week. Office environment requires employees to consistently use manual dexterity in reaching, writing, navigating around the workspace. This position requires fully functional vision and auditory abilities. This position may include hours standing and walking, including up and down stairs, moving items up to 30-pounds.
