Lisa Dunkley: Caribbean American Heritage Month, Recognizing Immigrants and Refugees

In celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month, we continue to recognize the economic, cultural, political, and social contributions of notable immigrants and refugees who’ve helped shape America’s vibrant tapestry. Today, we spotlight Florida State Representative Lisa Dunkley.

Lisa Dunkley was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1972. At 23, she immigrated to the United States with her infant daughter and siblings, settling in Sunrise, Florida.

Dunkley joined the United States Army, serving multiple tours in Iraq and during Operation Enduring Freedom before retiring from the military and pursuing a career in public service. Following her enlistment in the army, Dunkley also became an active member of the City of Sunrise Veterans Advisory Board, where she continues to advocate for her fellow veterans today.

Dunkley earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and human resources from Florida Atlantic University, graduating in 2010. After attending college, Dunkley worked for the Florida Department of Transportation in budget analysis and was a consulting member of the non-profit organization Lights on Girls Inc. Dunkley’s work with youth at the New Life Fellowship center drew her to community development and investment. Alongside her membership in various other organizations, these experiences provided Dunkley with valuable insights into the public, private, and volunteer sectors.

With over two decades of work experience in her district, Dunkley’s transition to politics came naturally. In Sunrise, she was a member of various community improvement campaigns, eventually becoming involved in local and state government.

In 2022, Dunkley ran in Broward County’s Democratic Primary, in which she emerged victorious over two other candidates. Assuming office in the Florida House of Representatives in 2022, she has sponsored bills related to education, veterans’ support, and housing affordability.

Reelected for her seat in the Florida House of Representatives in 2024, Dunkley continues to serve the state’s 97th district.
