The International Institute of Buffalo’s New American Integration (NAI) Department recently hosted its latest Community Orientation series. The two-day workshop helped our newly arrived clients navigate resources, expectations, and various new norms as they begin their new lives here in Western New York.
The initiative, led by IIB’s Lead Resettlement Case Manager, Summer Cerbone, welcomed clients, including 11 families. The two sessions featured presentations by Gabrielle Graham, the Buffalo Museum of Science and Tifft Nature Preserve Community Engagement Manager, and Marvin Spates, the Buffalo Fire Department Captain.
During the workshop, folks met and learned about the IIB staff they’ll be working with. They also discussed foundational topics, including their Case Management and Resettlement Processes, Housing and Home Safety, Laws and Immigration, and Personal Health. As many of our clients arrive after spending decades waiting in United Nations refugee camps abroad, starting their new lives here in Western New York intrinsically accompanies some learning curves. Presentations at Community Orientation guide folks through core services such as education, public transportation, and our in-house Job Club that quickly and successfully assist our clients in finding employment. They also learned about culture and responsibilities in the U.S.; presenters delved into budgeting, paying bills, neighborhood expectations, and responsibilities.
Buffalo Fire Department Captain Marvin Spates took time to educate attendees on electrical fire tips and what to keep an eye on with appliances, outlets, and various other extensions. Captain Spates also circled the room to show everyone how to operate a fire extinguisher in the case of an emergency.
The International Institute of Buffalo’s Community Orientation is important in setting up our Newly Arrived Neighbors for success. The presentations are a launching point for learning how to navigate new norms and responsibilities along the path to self-sufficiency and belonging.
