By creating a problem where none exists, the current administration’s suspension of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) is misguided, based on false assumptions, and will ultimately hurt Western New York and the United States of America.

Refugees entering the country for resettlement through USRAP are the most vetted population on the planet. Before they arrive on American soil, the United Nations and U.S. government adjudicate the legal basis for their refugee claims, conduct detailed security background checks, and perform exhaustive medical exams. This process can take years or even decades.

Recent refugee resettlement groups include Iraqis and Afghans who assisted the U.S. military and those persecuted because they belong to a different religious or ethnic group than the government of their home country.

Once refugees arrive, they quickly assimilate and add to the economic vibrancy of a community, often taking the jobs native-born Americans are unwilling to perform. Across the country and here in Western New York, they add to the tax base, reverse the population decline of our cities, and invest and revitalize rundown properties discarded by those who flee to the suburbs. Statistically, they are more entrepreneurial and add a net benefit to the country to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. Take refugees out of the equation, and it is a loss for America.

Even if we forget the moral arguments that accepting refugees is part of America’s proper role of being “the land of immigrants” and the right thing to do as a world leader, it is wise economically; that is why historically, both Republican and Democratic presidents have enthusiastically supported the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program since its inception.

For these reasons, the International Institute of Buffalo urges President Trump to rescind this executive order and resume this valuable program.
