Statement Regarding Stephen Miller’s Released Emails

By November 18, 2019No Comments

The International Institute of Buffalo stands with the more than 80 members of Congress calling for the resignation of Senior White House Advisor, Stephen Miller. We commend the Congressional Hispanic, Black, Asian Pacific American and Progressive caucuses and our own representative, Brian Higgins (NY 26th), for leading the call for Miller’s resignation.

Through the leaks of over 900 emails sent by Miller to Katie McHough, a former editor for the far-right website Breitbart, we have learned that Miller, the nation’s chief immigration adviser, promoted conspiracy theories that demonize immigrants and refugees and amplified the messages of white nationalist organizations and known hate groups.

These emails reveal Miller’s deep intellectual ties to white nationalism and thus disqualify him from his role directing US immigration policy. Miller’s xenophobia is revealed in a string of policy decisions which continue to tear apart the fabric of immigrant and refugee communities in the US and abroad. His xenophobic policies include the racist Muslim ban, which barred travel from five majority Muslim states, the reduction of the refugee admissions to an historic low, family separation policies, and radical increases in naturalization and asylum processing fees.

As Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter, “Each day we allow a white nationalist to be in charge of US immigration policy is a day where thousands of children & families lives are in danger.”

We cannot allow immigration policy to be driven by Stephen Miller, a man who has repeatedly and directly espoused racist and xenophobic beliefs and who traffics in conspiracy theories which demonize those who are more directly impacted by his policy decisions.

Contact your Members of Congress today and tell them that allowing a white nationalist to direct our immigration policies is morally wrong and a disservice to a nation made up of, and made better by, immigrants and refugees.
