As Caribbean American Heritage Month continues, we’re recognizing the economic, cultural, and social contributions of notable immigrants and refugees who’ve helped shape America’s vibrant tapestry. Today, we spotlight Canisius University’s 25th president, Steve Stoute.
Steve Stoute was born in 1981 in Trinidad and Tobago. Raised in a family committed to service, he immigrated to the United States in 2000 to pursue opportunities in higher education. Settling in New Jersey, Stoute attended Seton Hall University. He graduated with honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration, while also excelling on the track and field team. He went on to earn a master’s degree in exercise and sports science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later a Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Stoute credits the networking he undertook at Seton Hall for opening a path to future leadership in higher education. Following graduation, he was asked to return and serve on its board, an experience he says taught him requisite skills and competencies. He’s since went on to hold several leadership roles at prominent universities. He served as Chief of Staff and Vice President at DePauw University, where he successfully launched innovative programs to improve student retention and graduate rates.
In July, 2022, the Board of Trustees at Canisius College in Buffalo tapped Stoute to take over as its 25th president. His appointment marked a new era for the Western New York institution. He became the first person of color to serve as president in the school’s now 153-year history.
Since arriving at Canisius, Stout has prioritized the university’s Jesuit mission and championed academic and community engagement. He has launched initiatives to enhance student support services, cultivate partnerships with local organizations, and strengthen alumni relations. Under his leadership, Canisius has pursued innovation, expanding academic offerings and investing in campus infrastructure. Widely regarded as a transformational leader, President Stoute says he’s proudly accepted the expectation to engage meaningfully in Western New York given Canisius’ legacy in the region.
President Stoute’s numerous accolades include the appointment as co-chair of the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council, Buffalo’s Black History Award, and induction into Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit Honor Society.
