Tuesday, April 25: UB’s Bruce Acker and Yuejia Wang on China and the U.S. at the Great Decisions Speaker Series

Bruce Acker, Assistant Director of the University at Buffalo’s Asia Research Institute and Yuejia Wang, Ph.D. candidate in the University at Buffalo’s Educational Culture, Policy and Society program will present on China and the U.S. this Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

For the past ten years, the United States and China have been competing for the greatest global influence. One major point of contention is the status of Taiwanese sovereignty, which has become even more relevant recently. The possibility is that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may prompt China to take similar action regarding Taiwan. How will the United States engage China, which is increasingly seeking to expand its sphere of influence?

About Dr. Bruce Acker

Bruce Acker is assistant director of the Asia Research Institute at the University at Buffalo. His previous positions at UB include assistant director of Asian Studies and associate director of the Confucius Institute. He began his career as a Russian language teacher at Calasanctius School (Buffalo) and the Northwest School (Seattle). While earning his Masters degree in Russian Studies at the University of Washington, Bruce started working on “New Russia in Asia” projects at the National Bureau of Asian Research in 1993. Since moving back to Buffalo in 1999, Bruce worked at Buffalo Niagara WorldConnect and the International Institute of Buffalo before starting at UB in 2008.

About Dr. Yuejia Wang

Yuejia Wang was born in Northeastern China and moved to the United States for graduate study in 2015. After obtaining her Master’s degree in Global Higher Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she came to Buffalo in 2017 and started her doctoral journey in the Educational Culture, Policy, and Society program. Her research interests focus on visa policy, international education, minority labor migrations, and global mobility. In the past five years, she has worked as a graduate assistant and contributed her international perspectives to several UB offices, such as the Confucius Institute, International Student Services, and International Admission. She also served as a volunteer in the local Chinese community. She likes playing the violin, hiking, coffee, and cocktails.
