Update: Our in-person HELLO training previously scheduled for Thursday, December 7 has been postponed. In the interim, we are offering recorded volunteer training sessions to continue the important work of helping our newest American neighbors learn English. If you are interested in tutoring, please email Steve at volunteers@iibuff.org, no experience is required!!

One big challenge many of our New American clients face when they arrive is a language barrier. Those who speak little to no English will receive the help of an interpreter to understand important conversations, but this is not a long-term solution for carrying out day-to-day tasks and getting integrated into the Buffalo community.

Some may leave the house for in-person English courses.

However, for those who are unable, we offer English lessons through our Home English Language Learners Outreach (HELLO) Volunteer Program. By becoming a HELLO Tutor, you will travel to someone’s home and teach them English. It’s a great way to get involved to help Buffalo’s diverse refugee population.

This opportunity requires a commitment of 3 hours a week for 8 weeks and makes a huge difference in the lives of our New American neighbors.

No Previous Experience Required!
