IIB Partners with Roswell Park’s CARES Initiative

IIB recently partnered with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center through its Community Alliance to Reach, Empower, and Sustain (CARES) initiative to host a health resource fair.

English as a Second Language (ESL) students from the Buffalo Public Schools Adult Learning Center engaged with representatives from Roswell Park, the Erie County Department of Health, and our health literacy team members. They shared information and resources on cancer awareness and screening, dental and oral health, and nutrition. Students learned about breast, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancer, participated in an interactive healthy-eating activity, and connected with additional community resources.

The students’ native languages included Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Dari, French, Pashto, Spanish, Swahili, and Ukrainian; they were grouped by language and supported by interpreters to reduce linguistic and cultural barriers.

Representatives referred some of the participants to Roswell Park’s mobile cancer screening unit, EDDY (Early Detection Driven to You), which brings life-saving cancer screening directly to New Yorkers who need it most.

Health resource fairs such as these bring vital health education and resources to our clients and local communities. Click here to learn more about our Global Education programs and here to learn more about our Interpreting and Translation Services.
